Cuba

Overview

The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba has a fascinating Afro-Spanish heritage making Cuba a unique place to visit culturally. Havana is Cuba's capital and its largest city, a city beloved of Hemingway who used to savour his mojito whilst watching the Cuban populace stroll by. And now Havana is beloved too of the countless tourists who visit Cuba each year.

Cuba is also renowned for its 1950s American vintage cars, its world-famous Cuban rum and Cuban cigars, and the all-pervasive beat of the Cuban salsa.

For those seeking a relaxing holiday, Cuba cannot be beaten for soft, white sands, amazing diving and snorkelling opportunities in the warm Caribbean Ocean. Cuba also offers the not-to-be-missed possibility of swimming with dolphins.

Weather

Cuba has a subtropical climate, making it a great destination at any time of the year. The average annual temperature is 25°C; temperature peaks in Cuba's summer can reach 30°C.

In the winter, Cuba's daytime temperatures are typically 16-18°C.

The Cuban summer and autumn see most of the rainfall and although torrential downpours can occur in Cuba, they tend to be over almost as soon as they've begun.

Cuba's hurricane season is from August to October.

Main resorts & attractions

Most people are attracted to Cuba's 250+ beaches and the warm waters lapping on Cuba's many shores. Snorkelling, diving, swimming with dolphins in the clear, warm water off Cuba's coast, fishing & water sports of all kinds are all on offer in each of Cuba's many beaches and resorts. Varadero is probably the most popular of Cuba's beach resorts.

Cuba is famous for its cigars and its rum and it's possible to visit both kinds of factories in Havana and in Pinar del Rio, in Cuba's north-west.

There are also many attractions relating to the Cuban Revolution, led by the Argentine, Che Guevara, and native Cuban, Fidel Castro.

It is also possible to visit Hemingway's Villa Finca Vigia, just outside of Havana. Another remnant from the ‘50s, why not take a ride in one of Cuba's fabulous vintage cars - better than an ordinary Cuban taxi any day!

For those attracted by Cuba's Spanish heritage, the Cuban town of Trinidad is not to be missed. Lined with cobbled streets, punctuated with well-proportioned squares and plazas and decorated with pastel-painted houses, Trinidad is one of Cuba's most often-visited towns.
